Historical Background

Established in 1969 as Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR College) by the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), the institution aimed to offer accessible higher education to Malaysians. Named after Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the college began with 764 students. It was upgraded to Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) in 2013 and achieved full university status as TAR UMT in 2022.

TAR UMT's main campus is located in Kuala Lumpur, spanning 171 acres. The university also has branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang, and Sabah, established between 1994 and 2002 to cater to students across Malaysia.

The university comprises seven faculties:

  • Faculty of Accountancy, Finance & Business (FAFB): Offers programs in accounting, business management, marketing, and professional certifications like ACCA and CIMA.
  • Faculty of Engineering and Technology: Provides courses in electronic engineering, telecommunications, and related fields.
  • Faculty of Built Environment: Focuses on architecture and construction-related disciplines.
  • Faculty of Computing and Information Technology: Covers computer science, information systems, and software engineering.

  • Professional Accreditations: TAR UMT is the only institution globally to conduct the Internally Assessed ACCA Fundamentals programme and holds the Graduate Gateway status from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
  • SETARA Ratings: Received a 5-Star rating in the 2018/2019 SETARA assessment and a Competitive rating in 2022 by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.
  • Esports Recognition: In 2023, TAR UMT became the first Malaysian higher education institution to be awarded the Esports Academy of the Year.
